Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship smart city project, has won the Smart Gigacity Excellence Award at the World Broadband Association’s Broadband Excellence Awards 2026.

The award was announced on October 14 at the VIECON conference in Vienna, Austria, and went to the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy. Ambassador Valerie Rugene received it on behalf of Eng. John Tanui, the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy.

What won over the judges

  • A 79-kilometre fibre-optic backbone across the city.
  • 141 smart poles providing connectivity and monitoring.
  • An AI-powered Intelligent Operations Centre for real-time city management.
  • The Konza National Data Centre, automated waste collection, water reclamation and smart energy systems.

The city is being developed by the Konza Technopolis Development Authority about 60 kilometres south-east of Nairobi as a hub for technology companies, research and innovation.

The recognition comes as the government pushes its digital public infrastructure agenda, and as Konza hosts more digital services, including tools developed by the Kenya School of Government.
