Eldoret is preparing to host this year’s national Mashujaa Day celebrations on Tuesday, October 20, the first time the event has been jointly hosted by three counties: Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet.

The main celebrations will be held at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, which has a seating capacity of 15,043. President William Ruto is expected to lead the national celebrations.

A change of venue

The event was originally planned for Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet. In July, the President announced the move to Eldoret after meeting leaders from the three counties, directing them to involve all stakeholders in planning.

The government has been upgrading three stadiums for the occasion. In late September, the steering committee chaired by Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo reported that Kipchoge Keino Stadium was 68% complete, with Kapsabet and Kamariny stadiums also under construction. Roads and water connections in Eldoret, Kapsabet and Iten have also been improved.

Theme and build-up

This year’s celebrations carry the theme “Security, Sports and the Finance Sector (The Economy)”. Related activities have been running across the host counties from October 13 to 18 ahead of the main event.
