The Kazi Mtaani program, which President Ruto previously rubbished before discontinuing, has been revived by Ruto himself amid mounting pressures to tackle youth unemployment.
Announcing the program’s return during an inspection of the Nakuru Bus Park on Monday, July 15, President William Ruto revealed plans to resume the initiative next week.
“There are ladies here who have told me they want Kazi Mtaani. I have said in that Kazi Mtaani program, 500 people will be working here starting next week as we ensure many youths get employment opportunities,” Ruto told Nakuru residents.

Originally launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2020, Kazi Mtaani aimed to provide job opportunities for young people through community-based activities such as street cleaning and garbage collection.

However, Ruto discontinued the program in 2022, deeming it outdated and promoting the affordable housing project as a superior alternative.
Speaking in Kibra on October 25, 2022, during the launch of the housing project, Ruto remarked, “Kazi Mtaani is a thing of the past. We should get rid of the work of collecting garbage on the streets. Now the job will be to build houses.”
The unexpected revival of Kazi Mtaani signals a shift in Ruto’s strategy to address youth unemployment amidst growing public pressure.

While inspecting the Nakuru Bus Park, he also urged young people to maintain peace and avoid activities that could lead to chaos.
“To the youth of Kenya, please do not allow people to turn our country into a land of fighting, destruction, and chaos. Let’s maintain peace,” he stated.
