Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti found herself at the center of a storm of allegations suggesting that she was intercepted by Interpol in the United Kingdom while attempting to deposit large sums of Kenyan money.
The claims, which quickly went viral, accused her of trying to smuggle hundreds of millions of shillings overseas, sparking a wave of speculation.
Governor Ndeti swiftly responded, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated fabrications designed to derail her administration’s progress in Machakos.
In a statement issued on September 9, 2024, she labeled the reports as malicious, decrying the attack as an insult to the intelligence of Machakos residents.

This campaign is aimed at dampening the impact of the transformative work we are doing in Machakos,” Governor Ndeti declared.
Ndeti, who has recently been honored as the best county head in the Eastern Region at the ETA Awards, highlighted the ignorance of those behind the rumors, stressing that UK Customs and Financial Institutions have stringent measures in place to prevent illegal activities.
She further warned those spreading the allegations, vowing to take legal action. “Such malicious misinformation has created dangerous perceptions about me and my family members.
Let the authors of this narrative be warned that should anything happen to any member of my family or myself, you shall be held personally responsible,” the governor said.

Despite the controversy, Governor Ndeti assured her supporters that neither she nor her family had been detained or faced any legal issues abroad.
She reaffirmed her commitment to improving the lives of Machakos residents, citing the near completion of 1,000 projects under her leadership and the county’s record-high Own Source Revenue collection of Ksh1.78 billion in FY 2023/2024.
