United States Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has announced her resignation, marking a sudden end to her tenure just days after Donald Trump’s presidential victory in the U.S.
The ambassador, appointed by outgoing President Joe Biden, expressed a deep sense of gratitude as she formally notified her team at the U.S. embassy and submitted her resignation letter.
“It has been an honor to serve the American people by strengthening our ties with Kenya,” Whitman stated. “I depart Kenya filled with gratitude for the remarkable team here and for the friendship extended by the government and people of Kenya.”

Whitman’s departure comes as a shift in leadership is expected in Washington, with the newly elected president set to take office in January.
According to a source familiar with the decision, Whitman chose to step down earlier than anticipated.

As with all ambassadors, she served at the request of the current president, and her resignation aligns with the upcoming administration transition.
During her time in Kenya, Whitman championed a people-focused agenda that strengthened bilateral cooperation in health, security, and economic development.
Under her leadership, the U.S. directed emergency funds to mitigate severe flooding in 2023 and supported ongoing battles against malaria, HIV, and MPOX.

In her parting words, Whitman expressed confidence in the continuity of the long-standing partnership between Kenya and the U.S., noting that Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard will step in to lead the embassy in the interim.
“Our relations are stronger than ever,” she said, underscoring a shared vision for prosperous and democratic societies.
