In a bid to tackle malnutrition among children and enhance their general well-being, the Trans Nzoia County Government has initiated a groundbreaking free milk programme for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres.
The ambitious initiative, which aims to benefit a staggering 41,000 children enrolled in 434 centres across the county, was officially launched at Kitale Township Primary School.

Governor George Natembeya, speaking at the launch, emphasized the significance of the programme in addressing the pressing challenge of malnutrition among young learners.
With an allocated budget of Sh70 million, the programme is designed to provide each child with a packet of milk twice a week, ensuring they receive essential nutrients vital for their growth and development.

During his address, Governor Natembeya underscored the pivotal role of teachers in safeguarding the success of the programme. He urged educators to act as custodians of the initiative, stressing the importance of preventing any misuse or diversion of the provided milk.
“I am urging teachers to help protect this programme for us to achieve the intended objectives. Let teachers ensure that no learner takes milk out of the school compound. This milk is meant for the learners and it should only be taken at school.”
Governer Natembeya stated emphatically.
The programme, which builds upon a successful pilot phase implemented in 50 centres at a cost of Sh8 million, reflects the county government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the ECDE sector.
Tiwani Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Daddy Were commended the government’s dedication to improving education standards, citing recent initiatives such as the permanent and pensionable employment of 800 ECDE teachers, with plans underway to hire an additional 160 educators under similar terms.

Expressing his support for the free milk programme, MCA Were emphasized its potential to incentivize school attendance and foster a deeper enthusiasm for learning among children.
