Susan Nakhumicha handed over the reins of the Health Ministry to Deborah Mulongo today at Afya House, marking the end of her tenure as Cabinet Secretary.
Reflecting on her time in office, Nakhumicha expressed pride in the reforms she initiated, particularly in expanding access to healthcare.
Among her key achievements, she highlighted the training of over 100,000 Community Health Promoters (CHPs), which aimed to bolster primary healthcare services across Kenya.

Nakhumicha also pointed to the significant overhaul at the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), which had previously been marred by procurement scandals.
Under her watch, she introduced a new board and governance structure to restore integrity, and managed to improve stock availability in public health facilities.
Additionally, she took pride in operationalizing the Kenya BioVax Institute, a step toward enhancing local pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Despite her accomplishments, Nakhumicha admitted to some regrets, notably during the doctors’ strike, which left patients without essential care.

She acknowledged the strike as a difficult moment for the ministry, saying it was an unintended consequence of broader challenges in the healthcare system.
As Nakhumicha stepped aside, she offered guidance to Mulongo, urging her to adhere to constitutional provisions and existing ministry policies for a successful tenure.
Mulongo, who took office earlier this month, commended Nakhumicha’s work and pledged to continue building on the foundations laid.

She also encouraged Kenyans to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA) before its official launch on October 1, 2024, promising that universal health coverage would remain a top priority.
