Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday after being found in possession of a firearm stolen from a police vehicle at Jogoo Road Police Station in Nairobi’s Kamukunji area.
The theft, which occurred in August, had triggered a tense search that spanned weeks, involving a collaborative effort between local authorities and members of the public.
According to an earlier police report, the rifle vanished under bizarre circumstances when an officer left his car at the entrance of Jogoo Road Police Station to engage his colleagues at the front desk.

Upon his return, the officer made a chilling discovery: his Ceska pistol loaded with 15 rounds, handcuffs, a Motorola smartphone, and a feature phone had mysteriously disappeared from the vehicle.
To add to the intrigue, there was no sign of forced entry, leaving the police scrambling for answers.
The officer quickly filed a statement, sparking a full-fledged investigation.
Days of frustration followed as the search for the weapon seemed to hit a dead end.
But on August 23, a crucial breakthrough came when children playing football near Muthurwa Police Station stumbled upon the firearm hidden under a kiosk.

The children’s parents promptly alerted the police, setting off a chain of events that would eventually lead to the arrest of the two suspects.
The Operation Book (OB) entry detailed the chilling moment the police were informed about the discovery.
“It was reported to the in-charge of Muthurwa Police Post, Inspector Samson Maroa, by children who were playing near Railway House Block B, that there was a firearm hidden under a kiosk within the estate, about 900 metres from the station,” read part of the report.
Officers from Kamukunji and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) rushed to the scene.
The recovered firearm, still loaded with live ammunition, was immediately secured as the area was cordoned off as a crime scene.
Eyewitnesses provided a crucial tip, revealing that two known individuals had been spotted suspiciously hiding something near the kiosk shortly before the discovery.

The scene, fraught with tension, marked the culmination of a weeks-long investigation that had gripped the area.
The suspects are currently in custody, awaiting their court appearance, where they will face charges of illegal possession of a firearm.
The daring theft and eventual recovery have left many stunned, raising questions about security lapses at police stations.
