Full details of a phone call between President Ruto and a senior US official can now be revealed.
On Thursday evening the Head of State held a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio where they discussed about security matters.
The discussion also centered on the Haiti mission in which Kenya is leading a Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in which President Ruto said that he was assured of support.
President Ruto in a communication said that he was assured that America had not stopped its support for the mission.
“Our discussion confirmed that the United States has specifically exempted its support for the MSS Mission in Haiti from the broader pause on federal assistance, recognizing the critical need to sustain momentum for the mission and its role in stabilizing Haiti and restoring order,” the Head of State said.
This comes at a time when an announcement had been made by US President Donald Trump that his government had cut budget for the mission.
Reports indicate that President Trump had penned a letter to the United Nations (UN) announcing the withdrawal from the mission and freezing Sh1.7 billion that the US government had allocated for the Haiti’s mission.
President Ruto also said that they held discussions on matters of peace within the region particularly the situation in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
They also discussed about the upcoming joint meeting between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC).
The meeting, scheduled for Friday, February 7, and Saturday, February 8, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was organised as part of broader efforts to resolve the conflict in eastern DRC.
