- Notorious Haitian gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, known as Barbecue, has signed a peace treaty aimed at ending the rampant gang violence
- This peace agreement comes on the heels of Kenyan forces reclaiming Haiti’s largest hospital, which had been under gang control for months
- Despite the newfound optimism, uncertainty lingers as it’s unclear whether the peace deal is a genuine breakthrough or a strategic maneuver by the infamous gangs
Infamous Haitian gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, alias Barbecue, signed a peace treaty on Thursday, bringing hope to a nation long plagued by violence.
This monumental agreement comes shortly after the arrival of the second batch of Kenyan troops, who recently reclaimed Haiti’s largest hospital from gangs that had held it hostage for many months.
The peace deal, reported by Le Nouvelliste, was signed in a closed-door meeting between Cherizier and other gang leaders.
The move prompted a wave of celebration among Haitian citizens, who took to the streets to express their relief and joy.

“This peace, after more than two years of turmoil, is a significant step forward,” shared a local resident with the publication.
During the meeting, the gang leaders also called on the Haitian government to convene a peace dialogue, aiming to halt the widespread anarchy.
Cherizier, who leads the G9 Family and Allies gang, had previously advocated for peace talks with Prime Minister Garry Conille’s administration.
On July 6, he publicly announced his intention to lay down arms to foster national dialogue and promote peace.

“We have decided to publicly announce that our strategy of laying down arms to facilitate national dialogue and promote peace is already written in black and white on our agenda,” said Barbecue.
“We are ready to elect a credible and coherent Haitian citizen in the diaspora to facilitate the dialogue to end this mafia war and facilitate the road to peace in the country,” he added.
The Kenyan troops’ presence has been pivotal in restoring order. Mid this month, alongside Haitian officers, they successfully reclaimed an airport from armed gangs.
However, it was the liberation of Haiti’s largest hospital that truly marked a turning point, highlighting the slow yet steady progress of the peacekeeping mission.
