The Kenya Basketball Premier League 2024 Champions, Nairobi City Thunder, netted great honors following a partnership with Nexford University in which the players were given scholarships to pursue higher education for Degree and Master programs.
In a statement issued by Nexford, the scholarships were part of their support to the team as they continued excelling in their sports careers. The players will receive scholarships to pursue future-focused
degree programs, including Nexford’s popular Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Data Analytics (MSDA), Master of Science in Digital Transformation (MSDT), and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).
A top American-accredited online accredited University recognized by the Commission for University Education through its Nexford Kenya agency, Nexford will enable the players to balance their rigorous training schedules with their studies, ensuring they gain highly relevant business and digital skills while continuing to compete at the highest level.
“At Nexford, we believe in empowering individuals from all walks of life to play at the top of their game, whether on the court, the field or in the boardroom. This partnership with Nairobi City Thunder is more than just an assist; it’s a game-changer. By equipping these champions with future-focused education, we’re helping them develop the skills to excel not only in sports but also in business, technology and entrepreneurship. Just like in basketball, strategy, discipline and adaptability are key to winning, both in
competition and in life. We’re thrilled to support these players as they drive toward long-term success.” said Fadl Al Tarzi, the Chief Executive Officer of Nexford University.
Mr Colin Rasmussen, the CEO of Nairobi City Thunder, added, “This partnership with Nexford University is a huge win for our players and the future of Kenyan basketball. We believe in developing champions both on and off the court. By giving our athletes access to quality, flexible education, we’re preparing them not just for the next game but for life after basketball. It’s about building legacy, leadership, and long-term impact.
Star players like Albert Odero and Tylor Okari have signed up for the Nexford courses and more have joined since. The energy has shifted there’s real buzz and motivation. Players are talking about their goals off the court with the same passion they bring to every game. It’s powerful to see how education is inspiring a whole new level of ambition.”
Studies show that 60% of professional athletes face financial difficulties within five years of retirement, highlighting the need for career planning beyond the game. Additionally, 75% of former athletes transition into second careers, with many pursuing entrepreneurship, coaching, or corporate roles. Developing business, leadership, and digital skills while still active in sports not only enhances financial security but also opens doors to long-term success. By equipping Nairobi City Thunder players with future-focused education, Nexford University is ensuring they are prepared for life beyond the court.
Nexford collaborates with Kenyan employers to align its curriculum with workforce needs, ensuring that graduates gain relevant skills. Their study with the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) found 60% of Kenyan employers struggle to find digital and business talent. By integrating employer insights, Nexford prepares both athletes and professionals for success in today’s evolving job market.
As Nairobi City Thunder sets its sights on becoming the first Kenyan team to compete in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) in 2025, Nexford intends on empowering these stars with education that is as ambitious and future-focused as their sporting aspirations.
