Two female police officers were attacked on Friday night February 16, 2024, while on night round duties within the Kiwanjani area of Githurai 44.
In a report filed at the Kasarani Police Station seen by K24 Digital, Constable Mercy Mamboleo and her colleague Emmaculate Ngungi were attacked by three men while discharging their duties in Githurai.
The men wrestled the two cops and managed to get away with a Scorpion firearm belonging to Constable Mamboleo.
“Two of the men sandwiched PC Mercy Mamboleo and grabbed her hands while the other one held PC Emmaculate while shouting “UA” “UA”. One of those holding PC Mercy was armed with a pistol.
They managed to snatch away the firearm from PC/woman Mercy Mamboleo and disappeared to the nearby bushes. PC Emmaculate fired three rounds of ammunition but they managed to escape,” part of the police report reads.
The scene was visited by senior officers accompanied by detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB).
A thorough search has been mounted led by the Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) and Sub-County Criminal Investigation Officers (SCCIO) Kasarani with the aim to recover the lost firearm.
Several police firearms have been stolen in the last few months, raising security concerns.
On February 2, an AK47 and a G3 rifle were stolen from Kabonge Police Station in Kirinyaga County. After investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), it was established that one of the firearms had been stolen by Kennedy Mwangi Wangeci.
Mwangi was ambushed by detectives who were acting on an intelligence report before the AK47 rifle and 18 rounds of ammunition were discovered buried in a shallow hole outside his house.
“Two police officers from whom the AK47 and another G3 rifle were stolen are currently under investigation. Allegedly, the firearms were stolen after the cell sentry and report office attendant stepped out of their areas of deployment, leaving the firearms unattended at the reception area,” DCI headquarters said.
In another case in September 2023, a G3 rifle was discovered missing from the armoury at the Kiaruyu Police Post in Mathira East, Nyeri County.
The rifle was on February 14, 2024, recovered at the house of George Mutembei within Ndunyuruma village of Rwarela-Buuri East in Meru County, by a team of DCI Operations detectives backed up by their counterparts from Mugae Police Post.
The suspect escaped, leaving the firearm in the hands of his wife, Priscilla Ntinyari.
