- Journalist Macharia Gaitho was mistakenly arrested by DCI officers at Karen Police Station
- Gaitho was forcefully taken by civilian-clad officers while with his son, sparking a brief abduction incident
- The DCI apologized for the error, clarifying that they were seeking another individual named Gaitho
After shamelessly abducting veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho from the Karen Police Station on Wednesday morning, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has admitted it was a case of mistaken identity.
Gaitho was forcefully taken by officers in civilian clothes while with his son, who captured the incident on video.
The Director of Criminal Investigation, Mohamed Amin, issued a press briefing at Mazingira House, apologizing for the error. “We are sorry to Gaitho.
It was a case of mistaken identity,” Amin stated. He clarified that they were looking for a different person with the same name.
The abduction occurred as Gaitho and his son were leaving their home, only to be intercepted by a Subaru.

In an attempt to seek help, Gaitho drove to Karen Police Station, where he was forcefully bundled into a white Probox by men in civilian clothes, while uniformed police officers stood by.
Gaitho’s daughter, Anita Gaitho, confirmed via Twitter that her father was returned to the Karen Police Station by the same vehicle.
“I’m with my dad @MachariaGaitho. He’s just been brought to Karen police station by the car that abducted him,” she tweeted. “He’s safe although they roughed him up a bit. We’re making the abduction report right now.”
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns over police conduct and the safety of journalists in Kenya.
