Police are investigating the mysterious death of Peter Kioko Wambua, a 52-year-old passenger, who was discovered unresponsive in a matatu along the Machakos-Koka route.
Wambua had boarded the matatu in Machakos town on the evening of Saturday, May 25, 2024, heading to his rural home in Kamuani.
Before the journey commenced, he informed the conductor of his destination and paid his fare, requesting to be alerted upon arrival at Kamuani.
As the matatu reached Kamuani, the conductor called for passengers intending to alight. When Wambua did not respond, the conductor attempted to wake him, only to find him unresponsive.
Seeking assistance from another passenger, the conductor realized Wambua was dead.

Authorities arrived at the scene to find Wambua’s body lying on the roadside. His family was immediately notified and rushed to the location to confirm the tragic news.
Family reports indicate that Wambua, a Nairobi resident, had contacted his mother earlier that day, requesting fare to come home due to illness.

The nature of his illness remains unclear, although two sachets of medicine were recovered from his shirt pocket.
TV 47 reported that Wambua’s body has been moved to Machakos Level Five Hospital mortuary, where it awaits postmortem analysis to determine the cause of death.
