A Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) church service in Ramoya village, Homa Bay County, took a tragic turn when a 35-year-old church elder was fatally stabbed at the altar by a fellow elder in a suspected love triangle.
The congregation watched in horror as Francis Opiyo, an elder at Ebenezer SDA Church, was attacked moments after delivering church reports.
The assailant, also an elder in the church, concealed a knife inside his Bible and walked up to the altar before plunging the weapon into Francis’ chest.
According to Suba South Sub-County Police Commander Caxton Ndunda, the attacker accused Francis of having an affair with his wife, who is also a church member.
Immediately after the gruesome act, the suspect fled the scene and later surrendered to the area Assistant Chief, while the victim was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have since arrested the suspect, who is being held at Magunga Police Station as investigations continue.
The authorities have urged residents to seek peaceful conflict resolution methods instead of resorting to violence.
The victim’s body has been moved to St. Camillus Hospital Mortuary in Sori Town, Migori County.
