President William Ruto has announced the appointment of a new leadership team within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
This move comes the wake of a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, and several other military personnel.
Pursuant to section 9 (2) (a) of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, President Ruto has promoted Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of General and appointed him as the new Chief of the Defence Forces.

In addition to General Kahariri’s appointment, Major General John Mugaravai Omenda has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.

Formerly serving as the Kenya Air Force Commander, Lieutenant General Omenda brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
Furthermore, the President has made several strategic postings and promotions within the KDF, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of operations.
Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed has been appointed as the new Commander of the Kenya Air Force, while Major General Paul Owuor Otieno assumes the role of Commander of the Kenya Navy.

In line with the recommendations of the Defence Council, chaired by Hon. Aden Bare Duale, Cabinet Secretary for Defence, additional promotions, postings, and appointments have been made across the Kenya Defence Forces.
These include the promotion of Major General Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a and Brigadier Peter Nyamu Githinji, among others.
The President, in a live address to the nation from State House on Thursday April 18, confirmed the passing of General Ogolla and eleven other military personnel after the KDF helicopter crashed in Sindar, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, on Thursday afternoon.
