Kenyans have Woken up with a sad news of Kevin Kiptum ,24,who was a World record holder of Chicago Marathon.
Kiptum won the title after breaking the record which was being owned by the famous kenyan athlete Eluid Kipchoge.
According to the police report seen by Nairobi Post.co.ke says Kiptum was driving his vehicle registration number KDL 566F, Toyota Premio, when the accident happened at Kaptaget Forest along the Eldoret-Ravine Road.
The report read that, there were two others occupants, including Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana, and a woman identified as Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei.
Quoting the police (OB) report it read that:
“Occurred today 11/02/2024 at about 2300HRS at Kaptagat Forest area along Eldoret -Ravine road . It happened that one Kelvin Kiptum – The Chicago Marathon World Record Holder was driving his m/vehicle reg. number KDL 566F Toyota Premio carrying two passengers namely Gervais Hakizimana Rwanda male adult aged 37yrs-his coach and Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei Keiyo/f/adult aged 24yrs from Eldoret heading towards Ravine.
Upon reaching the location of the accident, The driver lost control and veered off-road entering into a ditch on his left side.
He drove in the ditch for about 60metres before hitting a big tree. As a result Kelvin Kiptum and Gervais Hakizimana died on the spot wheras Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei escaped with serious injuries and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
The two bodies were moved to Racecourse Hospital Mortuary in Eldoret awaiting autopsy. Scene visited and processed. The extensively damaged m/vehicle towed to Kaptagat Police Station awaiting inspection and further police action,”Read the police repot from Kaptagat police station.
Kiptum had only bagged the enviable Bank of America Chicago Marathon world record of 2:00:35 six days ago, and now he has lost his life.
As soon as the word got around that Kiptum was sadly gone, people from all walks of life thronged their social media platforms to painfully mourn him and offer their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
“Kelvin Kiptum was a star. Arguably one of the world’s finest athletes who broke barriers to secure a marathon record,” said Kenya’s president William Ruto.
Fellow athlete David Rudisha expressed shock after learning of the untimely death and termed the death a huge loss.
