Kenyans can be a curious lot if the Google Trends for February are anything to go by so far.
As football dominated Google searches, a handful of names came up as well and among them were Kenyan comedian Henry Desagu and American superstar rapper/billionaire businessman Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori.
In the past 24 hours to date, February 3, 2024, Ms Censori stirred Kenyans’ interest more than Desagu. This is due to her expected unusual dress code at the just concluded 2025 Grammys. I say expected because Ms Censori is known for being bold and risky with her dressing, at times either wearing barely anything or extremely body contouring outfits as she goes about town accompanying her man.
Donning a black t-shirt and pants, paired with sun glasses, Kanye West accompanied his wife, Ms Censori, who basically wore nothing to the event where they were allegedly uninvited. Ms Censori wore a sheer, mesh mini dress that bared all her feminine attributes- down to every body hair, nook and cranny- to the world, striking pauses that showed her front and back while her husband
Kanye West remained unbothered as the world gathered their collective shock in thousands of online comments and trolling. Reports later emerged that the due were kicked out of the event, going as far as having police escort them out of the venue due to Ms Censori’s dressing (or lack thereof).
As for our homegrown entertainer, Henry Desagu, he trended online after it emerged he was allegedly battling acute alcoholism and depression. Several Kenyans- both notable and ordinary- including musician Samidoh, State House operative Dennis Itumbi and a section of leaders rallied Kenyans to fund raise and help Desagu battle his illnesses.
According to reports, there are plans to raise Sh 1 million for Desagu.
“We will not watch as this great boychild, Henry DeSagu, whose comedy brings laughter to all of us, is brought down by depression and alcoholism. We will pray for his recovery and have him get quality medical attention, and get our lively Desagu back,” said Gatundu North Member of Parliament Njoroge Kururia.
Henry Desagu can be ranked among the second generation veteran comedians who tickled Kenyans’ funny bone with online skits that went viral. He was among the first entertainers to leverage social media to grow his brand until he went missing in action some years later- made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic period.
