Kiratu’s mother fell and wailed with grief as she viewed her son’s body, the pain on her face telling the story of a mother shattered by her son’s untimely death.
Kiratu, struck by a tear gas canister in his groin during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi on June 20, succumbed to his injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The video, shared on social media showed the grieving mother overcome by emotions as she viewed her son’s remains.
As mourners gathered to transport his body to his rural home, his mother was carried away, her cries echoing the profound loss and pain felt by the family.
Kiratu was among the protesters who gathered in the streets of Nairobi to express their disapproval of the Finance Bill 2024.
The protest, which turned violent, saw police clash with demonstrators in several regions across Kenya.
Kiratu became one of the fatalities linked to alleged police actions during the protests, which swept across 17 regions of the country.
According to reports, Kiratu was struck by a tear gas canister in his groin during the protests.

He was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital by a group of well-wishers, where he was treated for severe injuries and internal bleeding.
Despite the medical team’s efforts, the 21-year-old succumbed to his injuries around midday on Friday, June 21.
The ceremony was marked by sorrow and anger, as mourners expressed their grief over the young man’s death.

His mother’s grief-stricken face, captured in the video, has become a poignant symbol of the personal tragedies that have resulted from the recent protests.
“The pain of a mother saying goodbye to her son Shujaa Evans Kiratu who was killed in the #RejectFinanceBill2024 protests,” read part of the caption accompanying the video.
Nonetheless, Kenyans continue to call for accountability and justice for those affected by the violent confrontations with police.
