As Kenya joins the global celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday, 8th,March,First Lady Rachael Ruto has rallied for concerted efforts to uplift women and enact policies aimed at fostering gender equality.

Speaking during a ceremony at Kodiaga Women Prison in Kisumu, Mrs Ruto emphasized the importance of providing space for women and closing the gender parity gap through tailored initiatives.
The event also marked the groundbreaking of a workshop to be constructed by the Manu Chandaria Foundation, furthering the cause of women’s empowerment.
She pledged to introduce cross-stitch, an economic activity, to women inmates as part of their rehabilitation and economic empowerment strategy.

Cross-stitch, a traditional form of embroidery, has proven to be a successful endeavor in other prisons across the country, enabling inmates to support themselves and their families while incarcerated.
Rachael announced plans to expand the program to benefit women inmates at Kodiaga Prison, aiming to equip them with valuable skills for their reintegration into society.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” resonated throughout the event, with Dr. Salome Beacco, Principal Secretary of the Department for Correctional Services, highlighting the pivotal role of women in nation-building.
The workshop, set to provide women inmates with art and craft skills, signifies a step towards their economic empowerment and social reintegration post-incarceration.
