Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Stephen Mugambi Colbert, the mastermind behind a daring scheme that defrauded a Nigerian national of 150 million Naira.
Mugambi, along with accomplices still at large, deceived the victim by posing as legitimate businessmen capable of hiring a private jet to transport unspecified investment funds from Kenya to Nigeria—a claim they knew was false.
The unsuspecting victim transferred the massive sum of money, only to discover that he had been conned after Mugambi and his associates vanished without a trace.
Realizing the fraud, the foreign national sought the help of the DCI, which launched an intense manhunt.
This operation culminated in the arrest of Mugambi, while his accomplices narrowly escaped the dragnet. The DCI has assured that efforts are underway to track down the remaining suspects.
The agency warned the public about the rising trend of fraudsters exploiting elaborate schemes to lure unsuspecting victims, particularly through cryptocurrency transactions to evade detection.
In a statement, the DCI emphasized, “No efforts will be spared in dealing with such fraudsters,” and urged the public to conduct thorough due diligence before engaging in business transactions involving large sums of money.
While Mugambi is in custody, the DCI has vowed to smoke out the rest of the suspects and bring them to justice.
