A 47-year-old businessman is counting losses after unknown people broke into his car and made away with Sh1.8 million just minutes after he withdrew the money from a local bank in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
The man in a police report informed the police that he had withdrawn the money over the weekend and it was aimed at funding one of his projects within Isinya in Kajiado.
He kicked off his journey from Kitengela heading to Isinya but opted to have lunch at a hotel located along Namanga Road.
“He parked his Toyota Harrier and headed to Isinya before stopping at a hotel for late lunch,” a police report on the matter read in part.
Moments later as his lunch was being prepared, he walked out of the hotel and was making a call only to realise that the car’s window had been shattered.
He quickly moved closer and realised that the bag of cash which was placed on the backstreet had also been stolen.
In their report, police said that occupants who were in another vehicle that was parked nearby were the ones who conducted the robbery before fleeing the scene.
Immediately after committing the crime, the suspects fled the scene leaving the victim devastated.
Police believe that the suspects trailed the businessman from the bank to the hotel where they went ahead and stole from him.
“There might be a collusion between the banking staff and criminals. The staff brief criminals who go ahead and steal from people who withdraw huge amounts of money,” an officer privy to the matter said.
In the past the police have urged people withdrawing large sums of money to get security to avoid similar incidents.
Currently, sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are questioning staff at the local bank following the incident. In addition, a manhunt has been launched with the aim of nabbing the suspects who broke into the car.
