Kenya’s YouTube scene has grown tremendously, with content creators building massive followings and even turning their channels into full-time careers. While this is commendable, some trends have become repetitive, annoying and downright exhausting for viewers. It’s time Kenyan YouTubers gave us a break from these overused and sometimes misleading tactics. One of the biggest offenses is the rampant use of clickbait titles and misleading thumbnails. Far too often, a video promises jaw-dropping content only for viewers to realize they’ve been tricked into watching something completely different. Titles like “You Won’t Believe What Happened!” or “I Almost Died!” create unnecessary hype,…
Garbage, sewage wars: Kenya Power, Nairobi City County at war over Sh 4.3b electricity debt
On the morning of Monday, February 24, 2025, tons of garbage was dumped outside the Kenya Power headquarters, Stima Plaza, located in Nairobi’s Central Business District. The perpetrators were staff from the Nairobi City County (NCC). The staff went ahead to clamp vehicles belonging both to Kenya Power and clients of the electricity generating and billing company. The NCC staff dumped the garbage after Kenya Power disconnected electricity at the Nairobi County offices after the County failed to pay their electricity bills that amounted in billions. In a statement issued after the incident, Kenya Power stated that the Nairobi City…
Crazy Kennar: The unfiltered voice Kenya’s millennials and Gen-Z desperately need- opinion
In the midst of Kenya’s political and economic turbulence, a unique voice emerged, resonating profoundly with Millennials and Generation Z: Crazy Kennar. Through his incisive comedy and satire, Kennar, born Kennedy Odhiambo and a member of Gen-z, has become a beacon for young Kenyans, articulating their frustrations and aspirations in a manner both accessible and impactful. Kennar’s recent sketches, particularly those highlighting politicians’ extravagant lifestyles funded by taxpayers (did you watch his skit on a politician funding dancing baddies in the club with Constituency Development Funds?), have struck a chord. In one viral video, he humorously depicts the dramatic transformation…
Have you ever come across a wedding proposal- whether in real life or on a social media reel- where a guy pulls out all the stops for a romantic marriage proposal but it probably ends up being ruined when the woman overreacts to the proposal? Be honest, how much eye rolling did you do at that time? Did you almost go blind? See, a marriage proposal is a deeply personal moment, but in this age of viral videos and grand romantic gestures, some women’s reactions seem to go above and beyond- screaming, crying uncontrollably and even collapsing in disbelief. Their…
Professional’s open letter to scared parents with teens engaging in sex and on contraceptives
I am Ms Audrey Oluyole, a licensed Counselling Psychologist based in Nairobi. I understand that discovering your teenager is sexually active can be overwhelming, even frightening, but ignoring the topic won’t make it disappear. In this open letter, I want to help you navigate this sensitive issue with compassion, knowledge and the right tools to support your child without fear or judgment. As a psychologist, I see firsthand how misinformation about contraceptives impacts both teens and parents in Kenya. Many parents fear that giving teens access to contraception will encourage promiscuity, while some teens believe myths like contraceptives cause infertility or they are…
Kenyan gospel artist Size 8 and her husband, DJ Mo, have experienced a relationship marked by both challenges including infidelity claims and resilience. After 11 years of marriage, Size 8 announced their separation in August 2024, citing ongoing marital struggles. Despite this, the couple maintained a focus on co-parenting their two children and continued to collaborate professionally. In a surprising turn of events, DJ Mo proposed anew to Size 8 on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025, signaling a renewed commitment to their union. “This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes! Psalms 118:23. Grateful to God…
Polygamy gone wrong: How to take a second wife without wrecking your first marriage- opinion
Polygamy has long been part of African culture, including in Kenya, where some men still take multiple wives. However, the modern-day man faces a unique challenge- how to practice polygamy without leaving his first wife emotionally devastated or turning his home into a battlefield. Recent dramas, such as Jimal Roho Safi, Amira and Amber Ray or Karangu Muraya, Triza and Carol Kim, have shown just how messy things can get when polygamy is introduced recklessly. So, can a man take a second wife without breaking his first marriage? One of the biggest mistakes men make when bringing in a second…
They say you are what you eat but what if your favorite meals are quietly working against your dream of starting a family? From overly processed junk to hormone-disrupting fast foods, what’s on your plate today could be affecting your fertility tomorrow. While Kenyan millennials and Gen Z are more health-conscious than ever, some hidden dietary choices could be quietly lowering chances of conception. Picture this: You’re in your late 20s or early 30s, thriving in your career and maybe thinking about settling down. But when the time comes to start a family, things don’t go as planned. What if…
Yes, some married men are like first born children when it comes to their wives. In many Kenyan households, married women- whether stay-at-home mums or working professionals- often find themselves shouldering an overwhelming amount of domestic labor, childcare and emotional support. Meanwhile, their husbands, though providers, rarely contribute beyond financial aspects. This dynamic has led many to argue that married men function more like “firstborn sons” than equal partners. A common complaint among wives is that their husbands expect to be catered to hand and foot- meals prepared, clothes cleaned and ironed and even small tasks like fetching a glass…
In Kenya, stories of mistresses, popularly known as “side chicks” or mpango wa kandos, are as common as the morning traffic. From whispered office rumors to full-blown social media exposés, extramarital affairs often end in scandal, heartbreak or even financial ruin. Yet, amidst the chaos, some women reach a turning point- a come-to-Jesus moment if you will- where they realize it’s time to leave. But how does one walk away from an affair with dignity intact, avoiding public shame and personal regret? In my opinion, the first step should be them acknowledging the truth. Many mistresses start off believing they…
