A huge fire broke out in one of the dormitories situated in Moi Girls School Nairobi (MGSN), Woodley in Kibra Constituency on the evening of Monday, January 20, 2025.
In a statement to the public, Kibra Member of Parliament Honorable Peter Ochieng Orero assured the MGSN community and Kenyans at large that no lives were lost in the fire incident.
“I extend my gratitude to the swift response by the firefighting team, school administration, and local community for containing the fire that broke out at Moi Girls High School, Kibra. It is truly a relief that no lives were lost, and the safety of the students remains our top priority. I visited the school to assess the situation firsthand and engage with the students. I reassured them of our unwavering commitment to their well-being and pledged to work with the relevant authorities to ensure the affected dormitory is restored promptly,” said Honorable Orero in part.
He went on, “To the parents, guardians, and the larger Kibra community, rest assured that we are taking every measure to support the students and prevent such incidents in the future. This includes enhancing fire safety protocols and preparedness in our schools. Moi Girls High School remains a cornerstone of our community, and we stand together to ensure the continued safety and success of all our learners.”
This is the second fire incident reported at the renowned secondary school.
In 2017, 10 girls died in a dormitory inferno that rocked the country to the core. An unnamed student who was a minor and in Form One at the time of the incident was found to have committed the offense in order to get her parents to transfer her to another school.
She was found guilty of manslaughter in December 2021 after the judge acquitted her of murder, saying that her real intention had not been to kill her fellow schoolmates but to secure a transfer from the boarding school. She was sentenced to five years in jail.
