Brian Kawooya, a convicted criminal was arrested together with several others in an operation targeting robbers operating in this busy area along the Northern Bypass.
However, upon apprehension, Kawooya told ASP Rogers Musana that despite his dark past which has earned him several stints behind bars, he was now a reformed man and only needed a small financial support to run his small business and quit stealing altogether.
“I’ve been in jail many times, but why do you think I keep coming back and repeating the same?” he said.
“I’ve told you I need something small and I will not return to stealing. All I need is Shs 150,000. I just started my busines and I am selling alcohol and cigarettes,” he said.
Kawoya admitted to leading a gang of dangerous criminals who attack people and hit them with rocks, making off with their belongings. He said he could not remember the exact number of people they had killed in their robberies.
“I really don’t know because most of the time, we just leave them fighting for their lives and run away,” he said.
Kawooya said they have been operating mostly around Kalerwe, Kyebando and parts of Entebbe Road.
Swearing to make a change in his life, Kawooya said he was ready to live a legitimate life going forward.
He revealed that he had been to jail too many times, and twice sent to Luzira Upper Prison
The last time he was in court, he said, Justice Margaret Mutoni warned him that if he ever came back before her, she would lock him up for good.
To demonstrate his desire for change, Kawooya gave police several other names of his gang members including Francis Tumwesigye and Fred Magoola, who have been buying their stolen items.
