The County Government of Tharaka Nithi has taken a groundbreaking step in healthcare delivery by launching an innovative telemedicine program aimed at enhancing access to universal healthcare through remote consultations.
This initiative marks a significant medical milestone, aiming to bridge the healthcare gap between urban and rural populations by eliminating the necessity for long and costly travel for medical services.

Dr. Gichuiya Nthuraku, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health in Tharaka Nithi, emphasized the program’s potential to revolutionize service delivery.
“The new technology will significantly enhance healthcare access for our people, especially those in far-flung areas,” Dr. Nthuraku noted.

“Such advancements are already benefiting developed countries, and we are proud to bring this level of service to our county.”
The telemedicine program, developed in collaboration with 19Labs California and DTT Technologies Africa, places Tharaka Nithi among the pioneering counties in Kenya to pilot such an initiative.
The program has already been implemented in the county’s main hospitals, with plans to extend it to remaining healthcare facilities.
This latest development follows another technological achievement on March 4, 2024, when Tharaka Nithi County, in partnership with the National AeRoMission Accomplishment (NARMA), conducted a successful pilot test for the delivery of emergency medical supplies using drones.

This initiative, supported by Kenya Flying Labs, showcased the county’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance healthcare delivery.
The drone simulation marked the beginning of a safer and more efficient method for the Public Health, Medical Services, and ICT departments to transport medical supplies and organs, even to remote areas.
Tharaka Nithi’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed.
Recently, the county was honored at the Quality Healthcare Kenya Awards, winning accolades for the Best Managed Healthcare and the County Innovation Project of the Year.
