The incident occurred in Handlova, central Slovakia, with the perpetrator now in custody. Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba expressed optimism about Fico’s recovery, stating that the operation went well.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the moment of the attack, showing Fico surrounded by security guards before being shot.
The defense and interior ministers attributed the atmosphere conducive to such violence to escalating hate speech and division within the country.
