- Dedan Kimathi University students are set to pocket KSh 180 apiece following a democratic decision where students opted for equitable distribution of a KSh 1 million donation from President Ruto
- The University facilitated a voting process where students could choose between dividing the money, organizing a lavish luncheon, or directing the funds towards students’ bursaries
- After students voted to have the money shared, the university outlined a streamlined process for students to collect their share from the Directorate office
President William Ruto made a pit stop at Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri on March 26, 2024, leaving behind not just promises but tangible aid for the students.
With a promise to sprinkle some joy into their lives, Ruto pledged a hefty Ksh.1 million to fuel their entertainment pursuits.
In a light-hearted banter with the students, Ruto quipped, “When I look at you, I don’t think you are hungry. You look like you are doing very well.” He then teased, “Just say you want something small, you are not hungry. You want something small, that I will do.”
However, the real cherry on top came when he announced the generous donation, urging the university administration to ensure it directly reached the deserving students.
Cut to the latest development: a memo straight from the Directorate of Students’ Welfare has unveiled the monies allocation plan.
Each student is slated to receive a sumptuous or rather meagre Ksh.180 from the benevolent donation.
The memo which was crafted by the Director of Student Affairs, Esther Nthiga elucidates the decision-making process.
Through a democratic approach, the university facilitated public participation via a Google form, presenting three enticing options: equal distribution among students, a lavish luncheon, or channelling the funds into students’ bursaries.
After a meticulous tallying of responses, a clear victor emerged: 51% clamored for equal shares, 36.5% fancied a grand feast, and 35.5% advocated for bolstering the bursary fund.

Respecting the majority’s voice, the university crunched numbers and settled on the equitable allocation of Ksh.180 per student from the presidential donation.
“In light of the public participation outcome, it has been resolved that every undergraduate student during the January-April 2024 semester, including those on internal attachment, shall receive Ksh.180,” announced Nthiga.
Class representatives were tasked with spreading the word, encouraging students to claim their windfall from the Directorate office starting Friday, April 9, until Friday, April 19.
Any unclaimed funds will be seamlessly redirected towards enriching students’ bursaries, ensuring no opportunity goes untapped.
