On Tuesday, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) acquired CCTV footage to reconstruct the final moments of Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder, before his unfortunate demise.
The group of leading detectives from the DCI, under the leadership of Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto, determined that on the unfortunate night of Sunday, February 11, Kiptum frequented three distinct restaurants.
Kiptum was observed as he parked his vehicle at the Alex Inn Restaurant situated along the Iten-Eldoret highway. Once he disembarked, he engaged in a conversation with a man in his middle years before departing for another location.
He was then seen at another hotel, the Well Irish Pub and Restaurant located at Rupa Mall in Eldoret town. According to detectives, the marathoner arrived at the hotel in the company of Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana and a lady believed to be the accident survivor, Sharon Cheruiyot.
Investigators asserted that the trio reached the hotel approximately at 6pm in the evening and departed at approximately 8:58pm at night.
Information from patrons of the Well Irish Pub and Restaurant revealed that the individual frequently frequented the establishment.
Following their departure from Rupa Mall, Kiptum and his associates headed to Grand Miarmir Guest House in Annex, located along the Eldoret-Nairobi highway, approximately 14 kilometers away from Rupa Mall.
The Last Super: Kiptum reached the third hotel at approximately 9:12 pm, where he dined with his coach and the woman accompanying them. According to reports, they requested a meal consisting of meat and boiled bananas.
“He arrived here at around 9.12 pm and parked his vehicle then ordered food, meat, and bananas, and ate it all before leaving here at around 10.15 pm,” narrated a worker at the Grand Miarmir Guest House.
Based on the gate logs, Kiptum departed from the third hotel at approximately 10:25 pm, and 45 minutes later, he was involved in a crash along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road around 11 pm.
Survivor recounts final moments: Sharon Cheruiyot, the survivor, refuted claims of a car malfunction preceding the accident, asserting that the vehicle was in proper working order.
She added that while seated in the back seat, she alerted Kiptum that the vehicle was veering off the road. However, by the time Kiptum realized the same, it was too late for him to steer the vehicle back to stability.
Police concurred with her statement, and ruled out foul play in the accident.
