Two passengers seeking transport to Mombasa were robbed of over KSh 400,000 after falling victim to a cunning gang posing as good Samaritans.
The incident, which unfolded near the Simba Cement area in Athi River, underscores the perils of relying on unverified transport during the festive rush.
The victims, a man from Kiambu and a woman from Mombasa, were stranded at Mlolongo, grappling with the nationwide shortage of public transport.
As desperation set in, a private vehicle stopped, offering them a lift. Inside the car were four strangers who appeared kind but were, in reality, seasoned criminals.

Meanwhile, the female passenger lost KSh 49,000 and other personal items.
After the robbery, the gang abandoned their victims in the Ngarariga area of Limuru, miles away from their intended destination.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Athi River has since launched a manhunt for the gang, vowing to bring them to justice.
“We are determined to dismantle these criminal networks preying on holiday travelers,” a DCI spokesperson said, urging the public to remain vigilant during the festive season.
